Betting On What NFL Coach Will Get Fired First Preview & Odds
We are often betting on the next team to win the Super Bowl. Or even what superstar will outperform his peers and win the NFL MVP award. Those for sure are fun and profitable bets in the NFL.
Betting on things going badly for a coach is both fun and slightly evil; count me in!
Don’t get me wrong, this is not about wishing that a head coach has a terrible year for our benefit. It is more about guessing the inevitable. Most of the coaches on this list are sloppy, and getting fired is more than justified. In some cases, a NFL head coach getting fired is even expected.
Let’s look at the names and betting odds for the first coach to be fired in the NFL during the 2019 season:
NFL Coaches That Are Betting Favorites To Getting Fired First
Jay Gruden +300 – Washington Redskins
Jay Gruden is running out of time to show owner Dan Snyder he’s the guy that can get the Redskins back to the glory days. In five years with Washington, Gruden made it to the playoffs once and posted a winning season two times. The last two years his team has been 7-9 with very little to celebrate.
Gruden goes into his sixth season with Colt McCoy, Case Keenum, and rookie Dwayne Haskins as his possibilities under center. McCoy has been a backup all his career in the NFL, Keenum has shown he’s not capable of leading a team, and Haskins is a rookie.
Not to mention his offensive line is rated as one of the worst in the league. It’s a recipe for disaster.
At 3/1, Gruden is by far the best bet available on the board to get fire. It’s hard even to explain how he has lasted so long on the job.
Pat Shurmur +700 – New York Giants
Oddly enough, the second guy on this list is also from the NFC East division. Pat Shurmur is +700 to be the first coach fired with an implied probability of 12% for this bet to become a winner.
Unlike Gruden, Shurmur is fairly new on the job as he has had only one season with the Giants; posting a 5-11 record. It’s a bad record, but considering the lack of talent on New York’s roster, winning five games in 2018 might be considered an accomplishment.
Shurmur has the nod from general manager Dave Gettleman, so in theory, his job should be safe. At least for one more season. The one thing Shurmur can do to put himself in a bad spot is giving the QB job to Eli Manning without hesitation. Manning will drag Shurmur to the ground if the HC lets him.
Matt Patricia +1000 – Detroit Lions
I’m not a fan of Matt Patricia and never have been. Patricia is an overrated coach who happened to be good friends with Bill Belichick and took advantage of it. His defense with New England were awful. While a defensive coordinator job might suit him, being a head coach is another deal.
In 2018, Patricia won six games, and the Lions posted a 6-10 record. The season was a failure, especially on offense. Detroit goes into the 2019 season as the team with the worst odds to win the NFC North at +1200.
Patricia has added pressure because he blew up a team that was at least in playoffs contention in the last few years to make his version of it. They also went and got several talented veterans in free agency, including DT Trey Flowers, WR Danny Amendola, and TE Jesse James.
He has no excuse this year to not show a significant improvement during his second season with the franchise.
Bill O’Brien +1200 – Houston Texans
How is Bill O’Brien on this list you might ask. After all, his team posted an 11-5 record last season and won the AFC South division. The thing with O’Brien is he has failed to take the next step with the Houston Texans.
Houston is always in contention to win the division and more often than none they do. However, they can’t find a way to compete with the big names inside the AFC. O’Brien is on his sixth year with the Texans, and in three of his previous five seasons, he took the team to the playoffs.
As I mentioned, they haven’t delivered in the postseason. Houston is 1-3 in the playoffs during his tenure, and his only victory was against the Oakland Raiders.
Bill O’Brien might lose his job at the end of the year, if he doesn’t take the Texans to the next stage. However, it’s hard to believe he will be the first coach fired in 2019.
Dan Quinn +1200 – Atlanta Falcons
It’s crazy to think Dan Quinn was just a quarter away from being recognized as a Super Bowl winning coach two years ago. Since the Super Bowl 51 debacle, everything has gone south for him.
Quinn’s resume with the Falcons is quite good, but the optics are not. He’s being labeled as a choker of a coach, and his team as one that will never get it done. It’s a little unfair considering he has made the playoffs twice in four years with Atlanta. Last season his team was decimated by injuries and even so, they were able to win seven games.
For Quinn to be fired first, Atlanta would have to start the season with an awful record in the first month. All while their division rivals, Saints and Panthers, go the other way.
I think Dan Quinn gets at least one more season to coach the Falcons.
Jason Garrett +1500 – Dallas Cowboys
The storyline about Jay Gruden is the obvious one, but the one on Jason Garrett is the most fascinating to me. Garrett took the Cowboys to the playoffs last season and won one game; yet, the owner Jerry Jones didn’t give him a new contract. Jones decided to wait and see what 2019 will bring to the table before giving him a new deal.
Garrett has been with the team since 2010 when he took over as an interim coach. The Cowboys have made the playoffs just three times out of the eight seasons he has been with the franchise as a full-time head coach.
Internal Issues Could Affect Cowboys Performance
The 2019 season has the potential to be downgraded from the 10-6 record in 2016. There are contract issues with QB Dak Prescott and WR Amari Cooper. But also, the running back Ezekiel Elliott hasn’t been with the team in training camp as he leverages his absence for a new contract.
The Cowboys are a good team, but they are not talented enough to handle all these distractions. To make it worse, the Philadelphia Eagles should bounce back and jump as the favorites to win the NFC East.
If Dallas starts badly and the Elliott issue becomes bigger and bigger, the franchise could be on a free fall where the one sacrificed is the head coach.
