What the Odds say About The 2019-20 NBA MVP

When betting on the NBA Season MVP, keep in mind that following a single player throughout the season as they make their case for being the best player in the league is a much different feeling than watching them in a singular game.

Players tend to ebb and flow throughout a season, but the MVP usually plays at an incredibly elite level from start to finish and leads their team to success.

Team success and games played are critical for a player’s chance at MVP

When picking who to put your money on for the MVP, there are two trends to keep in mind:
  • Team record: Nine of the last ten MVP winners were either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in their conferences.
  • Games played:Only two players have played less than 76 games and won MVP since 2001 (Giannis Antetokounmpo last season and James Harden the year before).

Let’s look at the top four candidates and see how they match up:

Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee Bucks) – 135

2019-20 NBA MVP Betting Odds for Giannis Antetokounmpo

The reigning MVP is making his case once again leading the Bucks to a dominating 21-3 so far this season. The last player to win back to back MVPs was Stephen Curry in 2016, so it’s only been a couple of years.

Giannis is averaging 31.0 points, 13.2 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.4 blocks.

It doesn’t look like he’s slowing down. More so—his game is so reproducible against any team that his stats will always be there.

An even scarier aspect is that he’s played all 24 games so far this season. Last year he missed 12 games, but if he doesn’t miss more than 5 this season and the Bucks keep rolling, Giannis is an easy lock to win MVP.

Luka Doncic (Dallas Mavericks) +350

2019-20 NBA MVP Betting Odds for Luka Doncic

The fact that we’re even talking about a 20-year-old in the second year of his career possibly winning MVP is already impressive on its own. Luka Doncic deserves an award just for that.

He’s averaging 30.3 points, 10.1 rebounds, 9.2 assists, 1.4 steals.

Very similar to Giannis’ stats huh? Doncic has lead his team to a 16-7 record which is good for third in the Western Conference.

On an arguably weaker team, his ability to carry games against the top teams is amazing. He’s become an unguardable player just 23 games into the season.

When you’re being compared to Michael Jordan’s stats, you have got to be doing something right.

Doncic has passed Michael Jordan with the most consecutive 20-5-5 games in NBA history. If he can keep his team in the top three in the Western Conference, there’s no reason to think that a 20-year-old can’t win MVP.

James Harden (Houston Rockets) +500

2019-20 NBA MVP Betting Odds for James Harden

If the MVP award always went to the player who scores the most points per game, then Harden would be MVP for three straight seasons.

A lot of people (including himself) believed that he was cheated out of MVP last season and now he’s bent on reclaiming the award.

The reason why he’s less favored to win is that his team as a whole is underperforming. The Mavericks didn’t have that high hopes coming into the season but are surpassing them.

Harden is averaging 38.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists, 2.0 steals, which is some of the best stats in years.

The Rockets, on the other hand, were expected to be title contenders and are currently fourth in the Western Conference with a record of 15-8. It’s not a bad record, but they’ve looked highly inconsistent in their wins and it doesn’t bode well for Harden’s MVP chances if his team doesn’t turn it around.

Lebron James (Los Angeles Lakers) +700

2019-20 NBA MVP Betting Odds for Lebron James

NBA fans hate on LeBron because he’s LeBron. He’s won four MVPs but none since 2013.

Arguably, he’s only gotten better since then while carrying teams to the finals that probably shouldn’t have been there.

His stats of 25.4 points, 7.0 rebounds, 10.8 assists, 1.4 steals are mighty solid.

These stats not only highlight his scoring ability at the age of 34 but also his prowess in distributing to his teammates. He’s a huge reason why the Lakers are 21-3 and sit atop the Western Conference.

The only thing that is hurting LeBron’s chances at MVP is that he’s playing next to Anthony Davis.

Since AD is a superstar himself, people tend to push LeBron’s stats to the side when counting him for MVP. They say that he’s only doing that because AD is there. This is completely unfair, but it’s how the MVP award works.

LeBron can win the MVP, but he’s going to have to prove that the Lakers’ success is more him than AD.
