The Atlanta Falcons are just a few years removed from the Super Bowl, but the franchise has taken quite the hit since that time. Though the past two seasons have not been great for Atlanta, the team still has a decent roster and some impressive top talent in the NFL.
Much of the same roster and coaching staff is in place as the Falcons come off a 7-9 season in 2018. Critics did not laud their draft, but there is some hope for improvement as there is talent on their roster and last season injuries decimated them. After all, they still finished second in the NFC South.
Atlanta Falcons 2019 Roster Changes
The Falcons addressed their offensive line issues in the draft after that was a significant need for them last season. They moved on from tackle, Ryan Schraeder, who was ultimately benched last season. The move saved them $6.45 in cap money. They made a few more minor moves on the offensive side of the ball, by returning wide receiver, Justin Hardy, and signing two tight ends to go along with Austin Hooper in veterans, Logan Paulsen, and Luke Stocker.
The defense was a significant need for Atlanta, and they did get some help going into the season. Adrian Clayborn played for the franchise in 2017 and led the team with 9.5 sacks. He returns as a free agent after winning a Super Bowl with New England. They also signed defensive end, Tyeler Davidson, to a deal from the rival, New Orleans Saints. Running back, Tevin Coleman, left in free agency is playing for the 49ers. This leaves Devonta Freeman as the firm bell-cow in this offense.
Atlanta Falcons 2019 NFL Draft
Atlanta did not receive strong grades for their 2019 NFL Draft. They went after a guard with the 14th overall pick in Chris Lindstrom out of Boston College. Many thought this was a reach with their pick in this spot. They also traded up to get Kaleb McGary, offensive tackle, out of Washington. Again, this move was not graded highly by draft analysts. As the pick seemed like a reach with so many other good tackles still available in the draft.
They draft a cornerback in the third round, Kendall Sheffield, out of Ohio State. That pick has earned the most praise. The later rounds included a running back and defensive end, two other areas of need for the franchise.
Atlanta Falcons Schedule And Divisional Competition
The Falcons schedule looks tough. They don’t have the best draw when it comes to their competition compared to last year, and they have drawn a tough matchup against an increasingly challenging, AFC South.
They start the season off with a tough stretch against the Vikings and the Eagles and then at the Colts. The one good side for the Falcons is if they get through the early part of the year with a decent record, their last six weeks or so are their easiest part of their schedule.
Atlanta Falcons 2019 Predictions and Betting Odds
MyBookie.ag has the Falcons season win total at nine wins, but the over is juiced heavily on the under at -135 compared to +105 for the over. I am not high on the Falcons this year, and their schedule is brutal. The under here is one of my favorite bets when it comes to NFL season win totals so far. I think they could fall two short of nine wins and be a 6-7-win team this year.
