The 2019 British Open Golf Betting Preview, Odds & Tips

The British Open Golf Championship

Over the past six years, the Europeans and the Americans have alternated wins during the British Open. Last season it was the Italian Francesco Molinari who took the championship, so based on the latest results, it the time for an American win.

The Open is the last major tournament in the 2019 PGA tour. Most of the big names that haven’t performed as well as expected will try to save the season this week.

The 2019 British Open Location And Dates

Royal Portrush Layout

The 2019 British Open is scheduled to be played from Thursday, July 18 until Sunday, July 21, 2019. The Royal Portrush Golf Club in County Antrim, Northern Ireland will host the 148th edition of the tournament. It will be the second Open Championship at the course, and first since 1951.

The first two days of the event will be broadcasted by the Golf Channel for the US audience while NBC will pick it up for the weekend, including the deciding day of the major on Sunday. What makes The Open a very appealing golf major is that it usually takes place in a course in the United Kingdom, giving the European players a better shot of beating the Americans.

Types Of Bets Which Can Be Placed During The 2019 British Open

MyBookie.ag has a list of propositional bets ready to go for the tournament. We are still waiting on the futures odds to win the major, but, in the meantime, the prop bets are there to take. For example, bettors can place a wager on how the winner is going to be decided. You can bet on a 1 stroke difference with +250 odds. That play has a 28% implied probability of winning.

Top Promoted Bets For The British Open

You can bet if you believe the winner will be decided in a playoff round with +300 odds. In this century alone, the champion of The Open has been resolved in a playoff round five times, but the last time that happened was back in 2015. Bettors can also take the “No” option, betting the winner will come out after 18 holes at -450 with an implied probability of 82%.

Additionally, you can wager on the golfer who is going to be on top amounts his countrymen. For example, Brooks Koepka is the favorite to be the best ranked American, listed at +450 at MyBookie.ag. He’s followed by Dustin Johnson at +700 and Tiger Woods at +850. Other than Woods, neither Koepka nor Johnson has won the British Open in the past, so, if they win, they will be adding a new name to the winners’ list.

The top-ranked Englishman is Justin Rose at +330. If he ends up with the best tournament over of the other English players, then the play becomes a winner. Rose’s best performance at the Open was last season, when he finished in a triple tied for second place. Behind Rose, MyBookie listed Tommy Fleetwood at +500 and Matt Wallace at +800 to end up on top of the English golfers.

Top Proposition Bets During The 2019 British Open

One of the most popular and fun prop bets during The Open is trying to find out which of the former champions will end up with the best score during the tournament. MyBookie.ag put Rory Rory McIlroy at +175 to win this wager. He jumps out as the favorite after winning back in 2014. Tiger Woods comes second at +350 with an implied probability of winning this bet of about 22%. Woods is a three-time winner, but his last triumph came back in 2006.

We can also find the current champ Francesco Molinari at +450 and Jordan Spieth at +650. A little behind is Phil Mickelson at +1800. Mickelson won this tournament the first and only time in 2013

Top Picks/Favorite Players To Win The 2019 British Open?

Like I mentioned above, MyBookie hasn’t listed the betting odds to win the 2019 British Open, yet, but I’m thinking they are in the oven. Of course, I couldn’t help but give it a quick search. So, this is what I found.

Rory McIlroy +800

Rory feels the British Open is his major to defend and he usually delivers. Back in 2014, he ended up as the winner in Liverpool, and he plans to do it again at home. McIlroy will be at his backyard, with all the crowd on his side. That might be some added pressure, but Rory has shown us in the past he thrives on the pressure. He was really close last year ending as part of a triple tied in second place, but nothing would be sweeter than winning in his country.

Brooks Koepka +1000

Perhaps nobody is playing as well in 2019 as Brooks Koepka. This year alone he ended up second at the Masters and the US Open, but also ended up winning PGA Championship. Not to mention he won the US Open back-to-back in 2017 and 2018.

Koepka might be the best player on the planet right now or at least the one with the most confidence on his shot. His +1000 odds to win the British Open have a 9% implied probability of winning, which gives a lot of value to a red-hot golfer.

Dustin Johnson +1400

Dustin Johnson is the one with the second-best odds to win The Open amongst the Americans. Only Koepka has better odds than him. Johnson’s best performance at the British Open came a while ago, when he finished second in the 2011 edition. Last year he missed the cut, which should tell you he has something to prove in this tournament.

Tiger Woods +1400

Tiger’s sweet moment at the Masters should be considered the best sports moment of 2019. He now has another chance to add another major to his insane resume. The last time Woods won The Open was in 2006 when the dominated the PGA tour, but winning back in the UK could close out what has been a fantastic year. Tiger doesn’t have that pressure to win every time he jumps on the course. He’s playing with house money after winning the Masters and that makes him very dangerous.
