The Houston Texans made the playoffs last season, but they never felt like the best team inside their division.
The team will be in contention for another postseason spot in the AFC South, but if things go their way, are they suited for a deep run?
The Texans have won three of the last four divisional titles but have never reached the AFC title game. It doesn’t look like they have what it takes to change the course of history in 2019.
Quarterback Returns For Third Season
QB Deshaun Watson will be on his third season in Houston. Last year, he was coming back from a nasty knee injury suffered on his rookie year.
Watson played well, but not quite to his standards. The 2019 season might be the year he finally shows all he’s got. He needs to stay healthy to play the entire regular season and prove critics wrong.
Having WR DeAndre Hopkins doesn’t hurt either.

The Texans overachieved last season after they recorded nine straight in the middle of the regular season but failed to win in the playoff.
Defense Not As Sharp
Houston looks destined to take a step back in 2019, mostly because their defense doesn’t look as sharp and talented as in the past.
Houston Texans 2019 Roster Changes
The Texans franchised DE/OLB Jadeveon Clowney so he can stay with the team one more year before he hits free agency.
Clowney could still be a playmaker out of the defensive line, but he needs to have his best season yet.
Lost Two Playmakers
The team lost two playmakers in the secondary, when Tyrann Mathieu (Chiefs) and Kareem Jackson (Broncos) decided to leave during the offseason.
They did hire CB Bradley Roby and S Tashaun Gipson to fill the voids.
Houston Texans 2019 NFL Draft
Houston did very little in the offseason and instead, used the NFL draft to add depth and talent to their roster.
Drafted Protection For Quarterback
The offensive tackle Tytus Howard comes from Alabama State to protect QB Deshaun Watson.
They also made two second-round picks adding CB Lonnie Johnson Jr. and OT Max Scharping. Both should be trying to earn a starting spot in the preseason, or at the very least be in the rotation.
Houston Texans 2019 Schedule And Divisional Competition
The Texans will start the season on a complicated visit to New Orleans on Monday Night Football in week one.
It is one of the three primetime games Houston has scheduled this season. They will also play a game in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars in week nine, and right after it, the Texans will enjoy their bye week.
Facing Colts & Patriots
After the bye week, Houston will travel to Baltimore to face the Ravens. That outing is followed by key home games against the Indianapolis Colts and the New England Patriots.
Alongside their usual divisional opponents, Houston will play teams from the NFC South and the AFC West in 2019. The other two opponents from outside their division are the Patriots and the Ravens.
