LCK Spring Season 2019 Betting Preview

LCK Spring Season 2019 Betting PreviewIt’s Spring Championship season in competitive League of Legends (LoL) and one of the most prominent regions in the world, South Korea, is set to award a split title on Saturday, April 13. The 2019 rendition of the League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) Spring Playoffs began with a field of five teams on April 3.

Now, four remain and have descended upon Jamsil Indoor Stadium in the South Korean capital of Seoul for a split of the ₩ 350,000,000 prize pool and a chance at a regional championship.

What Is The League Of Legends LCK Spring Playoffs?

The League of Legends Champions Korea is the highest tier of competitive League of Legends gaming in South Korea. Historically the strongest LoL nation in the world, South Korea has produced a record five World Championship teams and four runners-up since 2011. SK Telecom T1 has won the world title three times alone.

LCK Spring Playoffs Format & Results

Like other top LoL leagues around the world, the LCK conducts two seasons annually in the spring and summer. Teams earn qualification to Worlds and the LCK Regional Finals based on their performances in the spring and summer seasons. The LCK region is widely known for having the most consecutive world champions.

The LCK currently features 10 teams. The team that wins the summer split earns automatic qualification to the Worlds Main Event, the biggest League tournament in the world. At the conclusion of the summer season, the team that has earned the most championship points also earns an automatic bid to Worlds. The LCK’s third and final Worlds qualification is handed out at the Regional Finals.

Results From The LCK Spring Playoffs And Upcoming Matches

A 10-week regular season eliminated five teams from spring contention and halved the league field to a playoff-bound five. The LCK uses a King of the Hill playoff format in which the number-one seed in the tournament is given a bye to the finals. The second-seeded team gets a bye to the third round and the third-seeded team enters play in the second round.

Interesting Developments By Sandbox & DAMWON Gaming

The fourth and fifth seeds, Sandbox Gaming and DAMWON Gaming, played in a best of three first round on April 3. DAMWON pulled off a 2-1 upset in the match and will meet Kingzone DragonX in the second round on April 5.

The Old Favorite SK Telecom T1

Three-time world champion SK T1 is the second seed after posting a 14-4 record during the double round robin regular season. SKT was bested in the standings by Griffin, which placed first with a 15-3 overall record.

Overall Uneventful Developments

A rather uneventful end to the spring season failed to produce any drama as the standings remained the same from week nine to week 10. In the playoffs, Griffin, with their bye to the finals, obviously have a massive advantage, but it doesn’t mean they will make easy work of whichever team advances from the lower rounds. That said, this tournament favors the favorites more so than most others.

Griffin Looks To Make A Point

Griffin League Of Legends TeamThe consensus best team to miss out on the 2018 World Championship, Griffin came storming out of the gate in the spring winning all of their first 12 matches. Hoping to prove a Worlds-less fall was a fluke, Griffin, which returned most of its 2018 core, has arguably been the best team in world LoL thus far in 2019.

Impressive Statistics Back Them Up

Four members of Griffin–Chovy, Tarzan, Viper, and Lehends–ranked first through fourth in the LCK in KDA during the Spring Season. Finishing first was Chovy, who posted a 10.70 KDA. The 18-year-old mid laner joined Griffin in March 2018 and is one of the top players in the world.

They’re Already In The Finals

Heading into the final rounds of these Spring Playoffs, it’s important for bettors to remember that not only does Griffin have maybe the best team in world LoL right now, but they also have the huge advantage of advancing straight to the finals. No matter what happens in the earlier rounds, Griffin is still one win away from a spring title.

But Don’t Forget The Possibility Of Upsets

They will surely be heavy favorites no matter who their opponent is in the finals, but keep in mind they struggled a bit after week eight when patch 9.5 was implemented. South Korea as a whole is still loaded with experience and talent and has produced upsets in the past.

SKT Dream Team: Contenders Or Pretenders?

SK Telecom T1 League Of Legends Team LogoHyped as the SKT “Dream Team,” the three-time world champs have had a solid spring and sit pretty as a second seed. SKT failed to qualify for Worlds at the 2018 Regional Finals and made big-time roster changes in the offseason. Among the newcomers is Teddy, who finished fifth during the Spring Season in KDA (7.39).

Faker Is Still SKT’s Star Player

But all eyes will once again be on Faker, the world’s most recognizable League of Legends player. The highest winnings earner in LoL history, Faker re-upped with STK in the offseason and remains the team’s engine.

With seven wins in their last eight matches, SKT is peaking at the right time. With a wealth of talent and experience, SKT can never be counted out, but do they have what it takes to shrug off DAMWON–who defeated SKT once already this season–or Kingzone before a potential mammoth final with Griffin?

Third-seeded Kingzone is a -1.41 favorite at SportsBetting.ag in its round-two match-up with DAMWON and will eliminate the tournament’s fifth seed with a win that should cover its -1.5 handicap. Kingzone edged DAMWON in both of their earlier meetings this season.

A strong stretch run and a pair of wins over Kingzone earlier in the spring point to SKT being the favorite in round three. Look for Kingzone to eke out one win in a 3-1 loss, though; the team handed Griffin one of their four losses this season and has proven they won’t lie down in big matches.

SKT VS Griffin – An Exciting Final Approaches

Those results would set up a juicy SKT/Griffin final. In what is sure to be a five-game series of talent vs. experience, Griffin will emerge the winner. Having proven they can handle SKT and the grand aura of the org, Griffin, two-time winners of this match-up this season, will prove a dominant spring is just a sign of things to come. Though a spring title is nice, Griffin’s main goal is Worlds qualification and a deep championship run.
