The 2019 NFL Draft in Nashville, Tennessee drew one of the biggest crowds the league has ever seen. Over 600,000 fans attended the event in three days. But after the NFL Draft is our turn to see who won it and which of these rookies will have an impact right from the start in the 2019 season.
NFL Teams With A Positive 2019 NFL Draft Outcome?
MyBookie.ag has three prominent teams listed to always be in the conversation to win the Super Bowl LIV in Miami next season: The Patriots (+700), the Rams (+750) and the Chiefs (+800). So which of these three had a better NFL draft?
Shocker. I’m going to go with the Patriots. With the addition of WR N’Keal Harry out of Arizona State, they added a much-needed player outside the numbers. Harry is a strong wideout who has both speed and presence to complete 50-50 plays. New England had lost a lot of weapons in the passing game over the last two seasons, and they needed some fresh blood. After getting a new gem for QB Tom Brady, the Patriots went the route they always do. They selected a lot of defensive players, a guard and another running back in Damien Harris.
Last season they picked rookie Sony Michel from Georgia, and that worked perfectly. Harris is an Alabama product ready to make an impact from day one. New England is +700 right now which is a fantastic investment at the moment. When the season hits the calendar in September, those odds will be gone. So get them now.
Which NFL team won the 2019 NFL Draft?
I can’t believe I’m going to write this down, but I don’t think Washington could have done a better job. The Redskins are the winners of this draft. When we heard owner Daniel Snyder was about to take over the draft, almost everybody was expecting a train wreck. He did well.
Washington added QB Dwayne Haskins without having to trade up. They should thank the NY Giants. Then, they selected another first-round talent in DE Montez Sweat to an already loaded defensive line. Not to mention they stole RB Bryce Love in the fourth round. Washington is +8000 to win the Super Bowl next season, but let’s not get carried away. MyBookie.ag does have them with an intriguing +800 to win the NFC East division. That’s an implied probability of 11% of winning the division.
No team has won the NFC East in back-to-back seasons since the Eagles did it in 2003 and 2004. This is a volatile division that always gives us some unexpected results. While Philadelphia is the favorite to win it in 2019, recent history says anything can happen with any of the four teams (Redskins, Cowboys, Eagles, and Giants). Grabbing Washington at +800 might not be such a bad idea, especially knowing they have one of the best defenses in football and a new quarterback in town. I get they are a longshot, but in my head, they are right in the mix with the Eagles and Cowboys. Their odds just have a lot more value.
Other big winners in the 2019 NFL Draft are the Cleveland Browns. MyBookie.ag has Cleveland as the favorite to win the AFC North at +140. I don’t have the numbers in my hand, but this might be the first time in over a decade the Browns jump as favorites to win the division right from the start. Cleveland has a loaded roster on both sides of the ball. And without having a first-round pick they added what could be the best cornerback in the draft in Greedy Williams. He’s a baller that will go right into the starting lineup, playing across from last year’s first-round pick Denzel Ward.
The Browns’ roster is so jammed with talent that winning the division might be just the first step. Cleveland is listed +1400 to win the Super Bowl. If all these players were together in another franchise, we would have taken them to win it all. They are just too good. But because it is the Brown we tend to hesitate. The +1400 gives us a 7% implied probability of success.
NFL Teams With A Negative 2019 NFL Draft Outcome?
It’s safe to say the Giants’ fans have had better days than what’s being going on with the franchise since General Manager Dave Gentleman took over. The proof is what happened during the weekend in the NFL draft. Nobody is expecting New York to win anything in 2019, but at least have some sort of identity to compete. The Giants passed on several good quarterbacks in the NFL draft last season to pick RB Saquon Barkley. Now the tailback is not the problem. But to skip a good generation of quarterbacks to settle down for a low-level talent like QB Daniel Jones in 2019 is ludicrous.
Jones won’t be the starter this season as Eli Manning should keep his job for at least two more years. But by picking Daniel Jones with the 6th pick in the draft, the Giants are making him the highest paid backup quarterback in all football. Jones will earn $6M per year to sit and learn. The Giants are +6000 to win the Super Bowl, but beyond that, they are +1200 just to win the division. Those odds are being too kind in my opinion.
